Photography As A Hobby – 5

Time Lapse PhotographyTime lapse photography is to set up the camera to take a shot every selected period of time. It could be to take a shot every few seconds or minutes etc. This process can carry on as long as there is power and space in the card to store the images.Time Lapse photography can range from projects that take days, weeks and require setups that include a camera casing to protect against the weather and theft, with functions to keep the lens warm to prevent fogging. A power supply is required for the camera and flash and the storage card replaced accordingly. Many may remember documentaries of seeds germinating and even of a dead rat rotting to skeletal remains. For a hobby, we will stick to short term time lapse photography, say of people, pets, sunrise and sunset etc. For sunrise and sunset shots, the process is similar to taking panorama pictures as described in an earlier article.Ensure the batteries are charged and there is plenty of space on the storage card. Set the focus to manual. Use as small an aperture as possible to have maximum depth of field. The use of a flash is recommended if there is going to be insufficient natural light.

It is necessary to have a clear idea what you intend to capture. A time lapse session of a barbecue turned out to be quite boring as nothing much changes, except for seeing who ate the most food. For time lapse photography of the rising or the setting of the sun, a lens hood is important to prevent side glare. Lens and filters must be clean as even very small smudges can turn up as flare. After the photographs are taken, software is used to stitch them together into a movie file. You may want to edit each frame first. This can be arduous and over editing causes the centre of gravity of the frames to shift too much.Infrared PhotographyInfrared or IR is light beyond the visible spectrum. Anything that gives off heat radiates infrared. Even without lights, the stove in a kitchen will show up clearly in infrared photographs. There are ways to convert a DSLR to take infrared shots. This involves the removal of the built-in IR blocker in front of the sensor. The IR blocker is there as some clothing is transparent to IR. The removal of the IR blocker is permanent and should only be done with a cheap second hand camera. There are also cameras that come with kits used for forensic IR photography. As a hobbyist, we stick to the simpler way of using infrared filters. There are many such filters available from third party vendors. These filters out visible light and only allow the IR spectrum through. Select a suitable number filter for your project.Remove any other filters from the lens. IR filters are almost opaque, so set up everything before putting on the filter. The exposure time will tend to be long, so use a tripod. Select an aperture to get a decent depth of field and set the ISO higher and focus first. There used to be a red line on the focusing ring of lenses, that seem to be absent on the newer lens. A bit of guesstimate is okay. Try with black and white setting first.

You may want to use the eyepiece cover to prevent visible light leakage to the sensor.Things will be seen in a different “light”. Plants will look white and water of a much darker shade. You have to keep an eye on the histogram so the plants don’t become totally white, losing all details.Simple IR setups can be used to detect faulty machinery parts. A bad quality or failing ball bearing generates noise, but which bearing? They also generate more heat. By taking IR photographs, it is possible to detect those bearings. The weather at some time of the year may make it difficult to take sharp pictures of your house that you want to advertise for rental or sale. An IR setup solves this quickly.

Digital Photography – The Importance of Choosing the Right DSLR Digital Camera First Time

It is one thing to have several large DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera manufacturers, but each manufacturer creates several different models as well as a variety of compatible lenses. So when we choose the right DSLR digital camera it will come complete with a fully removable and interchangeable lens. But how do you know which camera is the right one for you in the first place.Have you ever thought about it like this? Once you feel you are a little accomplished and desire a closer or different style photograph would the next progressive stage be to buy a bigger or different functioning lens? If this is the case for the natural progression of producing better images why does each manufacturer make so many different models? And Now, Some AnswersModern technology has done some marvellous things with media devices and the digital camera is no exception in this progression. The general features incorporated tend to be fairly similar across the board it is just a question of different formats, components, and variants that are used by the camera manufacturers that tend to dictate quality levels and camera performance.

What this means is that pretty much all the camera companies incorporate their products abilities to be mirrored within the industry. This does not mean that each camera comes with the exact same characteristics as there are several models produced by each manufacturer and every one of those cameras are different. It is what is known as a step up process whereby you being the owner of one camera type will hopefully once you have complete familiarity and conquered most aspects will also buy some compatible lenses as well as some other progressive accessories also associated with that make and model.Down the road you may want to upgrade the camera body itself, but would like to get a different make. The one you have seen and like the look of has a few additional benefits that will give you the opportunity to hopefully create better photographs and provide increased ability. This is where the step up process really comes into its own right. While as stated there are certain similarities with each make of DSLR digital camera such as picture taking procedure and adjustable picture taking enhancements such as ISO settings etc that is pretty much where the real similarities end.Not only is going from one camera make to another like learning the whole picture taking process again, but most of the accessories including lenses that we bought for the other camera will not be compatible with the new one that you have your eye on, this makes changing from manufacturer to manufacturer an elaborate and expensive exercise. So what is the answer I hear you say? This is why there are several different models of camera from each manufacturer, the natural progression stage as far as they are concerned is for you to buy just the camera body for the next or several models higher than the one that you already have. This will not only save you a lot of money due to the fact that your original lenses and accessories will be totally compatible with the new camera and with the money that you have saved in doing this you could buy even more lenses and accessories that will again keep you in that manufacturers loop even more.It is not a bad loop to be in, but it should at least make you more cautious and go into greater research prior to buying your original camera.Manufacturers are continually bringing out better and better models so the likelihood of you ever reaching the top of the range would not only be an expensive target, but a short lived one if you did as they would soon be bringing out a newer model to supersede the one we had recently purchased.

Always chose your initial camera manufacturer wisely because chances are that you will be using them for a very long time unless you have an inexhaustible budget. One of the best ways to guarantee that you are getting the best deal and at the best price is to make any camera or photographic purchase online. The reason for this is that high street stores and malls have massive overheads where-as online there are plenty of competition, but only a few places that you will get exactly what you want and at a bargain price. It is for this reason that it can take a while to locate a good source for discounts free delivery etc, but once the job is done you will not have to ever look anywhere else again.Hopefully by now you should have a pretty good idea on choosing the right DSLR digital camera for you, or at least a grasp on what it is you might want to be looking out for?

PEI and Wind Energy – A Perfect Fit?

PEI and wind energy certainly are a hand in glove fit as anyone who lives here will attest. Although put on hold due to the downturn in the economy, production of power on PEI, to be marketed on the northeastern US seaboard, will undoubtedly be “a go” in the future.

PEI has a definite plan in place to increase its own reliance on wind energy as well. Currently approximately 18% of electrical energy used in PEI is wind generated, however there are calls to increase this to 30% by 2013. That means that PEI will need to generate 500 megawatts of wind energy by that time. It is estimated that this represents a $1 billion capital expenditure with an economic spin-off worth $40 million per year.

The western tip of the island around Tignish/North Cape was the first area on PEI to see wind farm development. In 2001 an eight wind turbine farm was started and in 2003 it was doubled to include 16 wind turbines. This installation produced a little better than 60 Megawatts of energy, enough to power over 25,000 homes. The PEI Energy Corp, a provincially owned company, then added a second wind farm on the eastern end of the island to produce a further 30 megawatts of wind power.

In addition to these public installations, private companies from Europe, where wind energy is well developed have expressed interest in PEI real estate as a site for further wind energy sites. As well, private individuals on the island are beginning to think in terms of erecting turbines on their properties to produce power for their own homes as well as supplying Maritime Electric, the island’s power company, with surplus power during peak periods. Cities have shown an interest as well. Stratford has indicated an interest in adding a wind generator to supply power to public buildings.

With all this interest PEI can expect economic spinoffs in terms of both increased taxes and increased jobs during construction. PEI is a rural province, the smallest of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, with a full-time population of around 140,000. There is both a public and political desire to protect the environment.

However there will be challenges to face. Wind farms have been proposed in areas where residents have protested strongly against “having wind turbines in their back yards”. Even if wind farms are relegated to the tips of the island, PEI real estate is populated such that most land is private and the population is spread out evenly over the island; there are few areas that aren’t populated. Even if wind farms are constructed away from denser population areas there is then the problem of high energy transmissions lines. These are of course not problems unique to PEI. Wind energy critics point to problems with energy storage and on-demand need versus wind production issues. It has been suggested that surplus wind energy be converted to hydrogen. However in the foreseeable future it would appear that US markets would be able to use any surplus power PEI would produce.

In a world where the demand for power is ever increasing, PEI is blessed with the potential as a power producer thanks to the island being subject to considerable winds. Hopefully that which is a problem in winter, with storms, created by snowfall blown around by wind, can be turned to our advantage.
