Time Lapse PhotographyTime lapse photography is to set up the camera to take a shot every selected period of time. It could be to take a shot every few seconds or minutes etc. This process can carry on as long as there is power and space in the card to store the images.Time Lapse photography can range from projects that take days, weeks and require setups that include a camera casing to protect against the weather and theft, with functions to keep the lens warm to prevent fogging. A power supply is required for the camera and flash and the storage card replaced accordingly.Many may remember documentaries of seeds germinating and even of a dead rat rotting to skeletal remains.For a hobby, we will stick to short term time lapse photography, say of people, pets, sunrise and sunset etc. For sunrise and sunset shots, the process is similar to taking panorama pictures as described in an earlier article.Ensure the batteries are charged and there is plenty of space on the storage card. Set the focus to manual. Use as small an aperture as possible to have maximum depth of field. The use of a flash is recommended if there is going to be insufficient natural light.
It is necessary to have a clear idea what you intend to capture. A time lapse session of a barbecue turned out to be quite boring as nothing much changes, except for seeing who ate the most food.For time lapse photography of the rising or the setting of the sun, a lens hood is important to prevent side glare. Lens and filters must be clean as even very small smudges can turn up as flare.After the photographs are taken, software is used to stitch them together into a movie file. You may want to edit each frame first. This can be arduous and over editing causes the centre of gravity of the frames to shift too much.Infrared PhotographyInfrared or IR is light beyond the visible spectrum. Anything that gives off heat radiates infrared. Even without lights, the stove in a kitchen will show up clearly in infrared photographs. There are ways to convert a DSLR to take infrared shots. This involves the removal of the built-in IR blocker in front of the sensor. The IR blocker is there as some clothing is transparent to IR. The removal of the IR blocker is permanent and should only be done with a cheap second hand camera.There are also cameras that come with kits used for forensic IR photography. As a hobbyist, we stick to the simpler way of using infrared filters.There are many such filters available from third party vendors. These filters out visible light and only allow the IR spectrum through. Select a suitable number filter for your project.Remove any other filters from the lens. IR filters are almost opaque, so set up everything before putting on the filter. The exposure time will tend to be long, so use a tripod. Select an aperture to get a decent depth of field and set the ISO higher and focus first. There used to be a red line on the focusing ring of lenses, that seem to be absent on the newer lens. A bit of guesstimate is okay. Try with black and white setting first.
You may want to use the eyepiece cover to prevent visible light leakage to the sensor.Things will be seen in a different “light”. Plants will look white and water of a much darker shade. You have to keep an eye on the histogram so the plants don’t become totally white, losing all details.Simple IR setups can be used to detect faulty machinery parts. A bad quality or failing ball bearing generates noise, but which bearing? They also generate more heat. By taking IR photographs, it is possible to detect those bearings.The weather at some time of the year may make it difficult to take sharp pictures of your house that you want to advertise for rental or sale. An IR setup solves this quickly.
